The Curiosity of Chance

This is a film that we went to see at the Cleveland International Film Festival. In fact, it was an accident as we were going to see another film at later time and discovered we could see an early film and we randomly chose this from the ones at the available time.
If you have seen any of the teen movies from the Eighties with either the “Brat Pack” or perhaps a John Cusak film you have an idea of the type of movie you are in for with this title. I personally think that category is a good one but you can decide for yourself. If you disagree, perhaps one day you will see the error in your ways.
Teen movies have changed quite a bit since the eighties. If you say teen movie today it means a film about sex, with sex and lots of naked boobies. Now, I will never say no to naked boobies but frankly the teen movies of today are just plain silly and have few redeeming qualities. If I was still a teen, I’m sure I’d think that they are just great but as an adult, not so much. Eighties teen movies were a different breed. They had only the occasional boobies and had occasional sex themes but were more about dialog and acting than todays teen movies. Which brings us to todays review.
I was a bit worried for the first few minutes of this film. It was a bit stiff and I wasn’t sure that the dialog was going to be that good. But, I had no place else to go so I decided to try and make the best of it. I am very happy that I did. This movie has some of the best dialog for a comedy that I have seen in ages. It of course had all the stereotypes necessary for this genre of film. You had the jock jerk, the nerd and the popular girls to name a few. Of course this is the first time that I recall the main character being a gay high school student. I’m sure it has happened but I haven’t seen one before.
So, we have a homosexual transfer student at his new school. He is instantly beset upon by the jock and makes friends with some odd students. That isn’t much of a description I know but I don’t want to give away any of the good stuff. All I can tell you is that Makki and I sat there laughing for the whole film.
I don’t know if this movie will come to DVD at all let alone any time soon. I truly hope it does so that I can watch it again.
